Data Review and Gap Analysis for Skaneateles Lake Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Action Plan

The Skaneateles Lake Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Action Plan was published in 2017 in order to lay out a comprehensive approach to minimize the frequency and intensity of HABs in Skaneateles Lake. One recommendation of the HAB Action Plan was to perform a modeling effort to better understand the sources of nutrients potentially contributing to HABs, the lake dynamics, and to inform the development of a Nine Elements Watershed Plan. As a run up to that modeling effort, a data gap and trend analysis has been conducted to understand what data are available now to support modeling, what those data say about the status and trends of the lake, and what data are needed to conduct the recommended modeling. The findings of this analysis suggest that the lake is responding in complex and unexpected ways to a variety of stressors including invasive species and climate change. This forum will explore the findings in detail, recommend next steps and support open discussion on the lake.
