Presented by the David M. Rezak Music Business Lecture Series

Please respect that this lecture series is an off-the-record event, with a no social media policy. What happens in Rezak stays in Rezak. Thank you.

That evocative song at the most dramatic moment of your favorite show. The high-energy track playing behind the end credits. The jingle of that commercial that’s always on repeat, or the music playing behind that goofy TikTok or your favorite YouTube video. All of these represent synchronization licenses, or “synchs” for short—and a healthy part of the music industry. This week’s lecture will showcase the great work and day-to-day jobs of two Bandier Program alums working in licensing. Prepare to discuss and contemplate the business, art and science of the perfect music placement.

Featured speakers:

Jackie Feibus ’13, director, Licensing and Business Affairs, Zync Music

Zync Music is a creative licensing and publishing company located in NYC founded in 2002. Zync represents artists such as Lizzo, Alabama Shakes, ODESZA, Sofi Tukker, Bassnectar, Tune-yards, Vulfpeck, Toro Y Moi and more. Jackie Feibus is an alumna of the Bandier Program’s class of 2013. During her time at Syracuse University she was an intern at multiple publishing companies including EMI, Shapiro Bernstein and during her London semester she interned at Kassner Music Publishing. She started at Zync in 2013 as a licensing coordinator and has grown with the company over the past six years and is currently the director of licensing and business affairs where she works in areas such as creative music pitching, rights clearance, publishing administration, A&R and business and legal affairs. Feibus has also landed sync placements for Zync’s artists in commercials for Dove, Vodafone, Lancôme, Urban Decay, Fox, Zywiec beer and more. In addition to working at Zync she is also a student once again, taking classes part-time toward an MBA degree at New York University.

Carly Ziff ’14, manager of licensing for film, TV and advertising, BMG

In the Synch Licensing Department in New York’s BMG office, Ziff is manager of licensing for film, TV and advertising, where she handles the negotiation of synchs for the company’s roster in both domestic and international film and television shows and international commercials. In her role at BMG, Carly has worked on the music in shows for NBC, CBS, Netflix, Vice, Spotify, Telemundo, Univision, HBO Latin, as well as various film projects, in addition to international commercials for H&M, Volvo, Loka, and Banco Santander, among others.
