Curated by Lead Curator and Curator of Plastics and Historical Artifacts\, Courtney Hicks\, Plasticized: The Proliferation of Plastics in the 20th Century presents archival materials which document a selection of plastics’ former lives\, aspirations\, applications\, and affects while also offering a glimpse into the world of those individuals and communities often invisible behind the plastic objects themselves. Featuring materials from the the Plastics collection area at Syracuse University Libraries’ Special Collections Research Center\,  these selections provide historical traces of those who imagined\, designed\, worked with\, consumed\, promoted\, marketed\, and resisted this uniquely synthetic material. Explore plastic through its industrial introduction to its universal presence in our everyday lives. This dynamic exhibition offers a unique narrative through the coming of age of a neurodivergent black man experiencing life as an artist in white suburbia. As a black neurodivergent artist\, hip hop music\, particularly elements of sampling\, jazz\, soul\, and graffiti have shaped Washington’s identity as a black man. Throughout his upbringing\, he silently found blackness in a whitewashed community through hip-hop and protected himself through his headphones\, locs\, camera\, sketchbook\, and cans of spray paint. The places he called “home” as a young adult were ultimately just environments of chaos where he stored his belongings. This exhibition will be on view in The Herbert T.\, Williams Gallery at the Community Folk Art Center\, located at 805 E. Genesee Street\, Syracuse New York\, 13210. The works will be on view from June 24th  – August 17th\, 2024.
