Howard Chen ’02 is currently a producer for ESPN International, specializing mainly in ESPN’s video content for China, where he officially changed the Dallas Mavericks’ team name in China, and got Tom Brady to share a message with fans in Mandarin Chinese. Chen has also served as a correspondent for ESPN’s entities in Africa and the Philippines.
After graduating from Syracuse with a broadcast journalism degree, Howard was a sports anchor/reporter at WHIZ-TV NBC in Zanesville, Ohio and then at WUPW-TV FOX Toledo before becoming a reporter on Astros and Rockets game broadcasts for Comcast SportsNet Houston. He was also CSN Houston’s main high school and college reporter. During his time at CSN, with Jeremy Lin on the Rockets, Chen had a web-exclusive segment called “The Mandarin Minute” that ultimately led to the current job he has now at ESPN. In his career, Chen has also hosted a show on Fox Sports Southwest and has been a talk-show host/reporter for SportsRadio 610 in Houston.
Chen is proud to have been a part of both WAER and Z89 sports staffs during his Syracuse days and loves coming back to campus!
