Looking back\, she has described that experience as feeling untethered to any internal compass that she could use to navigate her place in a new country with a new language. She visually explains these experiences to us by reinterpreting the Korean language’s characters in photographs that enable us to see the contradictions of visual and verbal communication. Her images rest in the space between intellect and intuition. Chai’s curiosity about the interior space of her tool—the large format camera\, comparable to the interior space of a mouth—leads to the idea of the camera obscura\, a darkened room with a small opening to the world. \nChai uses optics (focal length\, perspective\, perception\, and magnification) to pin down the marks\, rubbings\, and paintings on her studio walls. The overall effect is a collage of ideas\, with an efficient yet complicated economy of picture making with intentional gaps. These gaps can describe the moment right before the sound of a word comes out of the interior space of the mouth. One’s mouth may understand and sound out words\, but one’s conscious knowledge of their meaning may not be fully there yet. This liminal space is the punctuated strength and slippery ambiguity of her photographs. Chai is an artist who remains open and disciplined\, committing to the mindset of the child at odds with that of the adult. The photographs born from this are restrained but not withholding. They explore how interconnected we are with those around us and the unexplainable expanse of the unknown. Dunlap explores this process through the meditative process of printmaking and papermaking. She creates representational landscapes of her body and space to show how we operate through various macro and micro levels with everything around us. Schwartz explores these ideas through oil painting. She is focusing on the impact of interpersonal interactions of her past and their effect on the present. Her personal experience of unlearning the shame she was taught to feel about her desires is where this journey starts. \nKirstin Dunlap is a print-centered artist from Chicago where she also completed her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Currently she is pursuing her MFA degree in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University. \nEmma Schwartz is from Lincoln\, Nebraska. She received a BFA in Drawing and Illustration from Herron School of Art + Design. Currently\, she is an MFA Candidate at Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. \nFor more information about the Biblio Gallery\, contact S. Curated by Lead Curator and Curator of Plastics and Historical Artifacts\, Courtney Hicks\, Plasticized: The Proliferation of Plastics in the 20th Century presents archival materials which document a selection of plastics’ former lives\, aspirations\, applications\, and affects while also offering a glimpse into the world of those individuals and communities often invisible behind the plastic objects themselves. Featuring materials from the the Plastics collection area at Syracuse University Libraries’ Special Collections Research Center\,  these selections provide historical traces of those who imagined\, designed\, worked with\, consumed\, promoted\, marketed\, and resisted this uniquely synthetic material. Explore plastic through its industrial introduction to its universal presence in our everyday lives. Worried so much in fact that she’s mostly put her own life – save for an unsatisfying job teaching science to middle schoolers – on hold\, always on call for when Emma faces another mental health crisis. After years of medication and psychiatric hospitals\, Kay and her novelist boyfriend Billy decide to bring Emma to a secluded cabin in the woods\, as a sort of vacation from the doctors and therapy. But when Emma miraculously starts to get better\, Kay is suddenly faced with a terrifying prospect: Finally taking care of herself. Within this exhibition\, artists explore\, express\, and perform their creative selves\, liberated from expectations and formulas. \nDespite the diverse range of ideas\, reflections\, and projects\, an elusive yet resonant undercurrent of unsettlement\, whether subtle or overflowing\, serves as a shared wellspring of inspiration. Borne from diverse origins like the echoes of family history\, the winds of political turmoil\, the currents of environmental challenges\, the shadows of systemic oppression\, or the reflections on mortality\, this internal unease becomes a poetic muse—a force propelling creative resistance\, eliciting responses\, and inspiring reactions. The challenging exploration of these complex ideas and emotions becomes a graceful liberation\, a gentle release from the weight of anguish\, allowing for an embrace of a subtle yet empowering sentiment of freedom. \nThe three exhibitions are envisioned as an unrestricted stage where artists feel at liberty to reveal and perform their provocative\, vulnerable\, and unbound selves. It is a celebration of artistic expression\, offering a space for self-discovery and liberation from the constraints that may have previously held them back. \nMarch 22 – 30\, 2024\nOpening reception Friday\, March 22\, 6-8 p.m. \nApril 5 – 13\, 2024\nOpening reception Friday\, April 5\, 6-8 p.m. \nApril 19 – 28\, 2024\nOpening reception Friday\, April 19\, 7-9 p.m. \nGallery hours: noon-5 p.m. daily URL:https://calendar.syracuse.edu/events/2024-apr-05/unsettled-unbridled-unbound-119745/ LOCATION:Nancy Cantor Warehouse\, Galleries 350 W.
