Elana Schlenker is the principal of Studio Elana Schlenker, a graphic design practice established in 2011 that specializes in visual identities, interactive work, and printed matter—in particular editorial and photobook design. The studio’s clients include Aperture, Candela, Carnegie Museum of Art, Conveyor Studio, Columbia University, Cornell University, Google, Image Text Ithaca Press, International Center for Photography, The New Yorker, Phaidon, Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, and the Silver Eye Center for Photography among many others. Schlenker has received the Art Directors Club Young Gun award (2015) and been named to Print magazine’s annual New Visual Artist list (2013), a distinction recognizing the top twenty creative talents under age thirty. Her work has been shortlisted for the Paris Photo/Aperture Photobook Awards twice in 2016 (Dark Archives by Andre Bradley / Where We’ve Been, Where We’re Going, Why? by Dan Boardman and Aspen Mays) and in 2018 (Wood River Blue Pool by Jo Ann Walters). Schlenker publishes Gratuitous Type, an occasional pamphlet of typographic smut, and is the creator of Less Than 100, a traveling pop up shop for gender wage parity. On select projects, she collaborates with the art director and illustrator Mark Pernice through their joint studio Out of Office. Since 2016, she has lectured at the Image Text Ithaca MFA program at Ithaca College.
