Biology Faculty Candidate: Using Natural Variation to Study Function in the Human Microbiome

The Department of Biology welcomes Patrick Bradley, Ph.D., from the Gladstone Institute of Data Science and Biotechnology in San Francisco. Dr. Bradley is a candidate for a Biology faculty position in the area of Bioinformatics.

Abstract: What constitutes a healthy human microbiome? And why are we colonized by certain microbes and not others? Answering these questions would open up new therapeutic avenues, especially if we could link specific microbial genes to host colonization and health. However, the enormous variation we observe in microbiomes — between individuals, body sites, populations, and microbial species and strains — makes it hard to identify the right explanatory factors. My research focuses on solving this problem by combining omics-scale data with new computational tools that can parse and harness this natural variation, making it possible to extract new insights about how gene function in the microbiome relates to health and disease.
