The BioInspired Institute and the Office of Inclusive Excellence in the College of Engineering and Computer Science present a virtual screening of the documentary Picture a Scientist. This film is a feature-length documentary chronicling the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. A biologist, a chemist, and a geologist lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, overcoming brutal harassment, institutional discrimination, and years of subtle slights to revolutionize the culture of science. From cramped laboratories to spectacular field sites, we also encounter scientific luminaries who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

The screening and discussion is an opportunity to see through the eyes of women in STEM the discrimination they face and the burdens they carry. Doing so will enable folks to better support women in STEM in particular, and women in general. It will also orient viewers as to what to look out for so they can step up quickly and address the inequities they encounter.

The documentary is viewable through the Libraries’ virtual holdings, and we recommend viewing the film between Friday, April 9 and Monday, April 12. We will then hold two synchronous, facilitated sessions to discuss the documentary, encourage personal reflection, and develop actionable approaches for combating gender discrimination in STEM in our own community. You will receive the viewing link and pre- and post-screening questions a few days before the recommended viewing window.

When you RSVP (link below) please choose one of two the facilitated sessions.
