Cruel April 2021: Ada Salas

Point of Contact will once again host nationally-and internationally-celebrated poets for this year’s Cruel April Reading Series, which runs throughout April via Zoom. The annual series, held in celebration of National Poetry Month, also marks the release of the 14th annual poetry journal, Corresponding Voices, which features the work of this year’s readers — Ángelo Néstore, Arthur Flowers, David Lloyd, Ada Salas and Graciela Cros.

Point of Contact welcome poet Ada Salas on Friday April 23rd at 5pm. Reading will be in both Spanish and English.

Ada Salas was born in Cáceres, Spain in 1965. She has published the following books of poetry: Arte y memoria del inocente (1988, University of Extremadura, “Juan Manuel Rozas” award) Variaciones en blanco (1994, Hiperión, “Hiperión” award) La sed  (1997, Hiperión) Noticia de la luz (2003, Escuela de arte de Mérida), Lugar de la derrota (2003, Hiperión), Esto no es el silencio (2008, Hiperión, “Ciudad de Córdoba” award), No duerme el animal (2009, Hiperión)—a collection of most of her previously published poetry—Limbo y otros poemas (Pre-Textos, 2013) and Descendimiento (Pre-Textos, 2018). Also, in collaboration with photographer Tete Alejandre she published Reflejos (2006). The books Ashes to Ashes (Editora Regional de Extremadura, 2011) and Diez Mandamientos (La Oficina ediciones, 2016) are the fruit of her work with painter Jesús Plancencia.

In 2016 the press Fondo de Cultura Económica published the anthology Escribir y borrar  that also includes a selection of her essays. Highlights of her prose work about poetic writing are the books Alguien aquí (Hiperión, 2005), El margen, el error, la tachadura (de la metáfora y otros asuntos más o menos poéticos) (Diputación de Badajoz, Best Essay Award “Fernando Pérez”, 2011) and Lengua del alma (“Poética y Poesía”, Fundación Juan March, 2019).

In 2019 she was awarded the “Medalla de Extremadura” for her body of work.

Together with Juan Abeleira she has translated A la Misteriosa and Las tinieblas by Robert Desnos (Hiperión).

Three of her books have been translated to Swedish and an anthology of her work has been translated to Italian.

Ada Salas nació en Cáceres en 1965. Ha publicado los siguientes libros de poesía: Arte y memoria del inocente (1988, Universidad de Extremadura, Premio “Juan Manuel Rozas”) Variaciones en blanco (1994, Hiperión, Premio “Hiperión”) La sed  (1997, Hiperión) Noticia de la luz (2003, Escuela de arte de Mérida), Lugar de la derrota (2003, Hiperión), Esto no es el silencio (2008, Hiperión, Premio “Ciudad de Córdoba”), No duerme el animal (2009, Hiperión), que recoge la casi totalidad de su obra hasta ese momento, Limbo y otros poemas (Pre-Textos, 2013) y Descendimiento (Pre-Textos, 2018).  Y en colaboración con el fotógrafo Tete Alejandre ha publicado Reflejos (2006) y son fruto de su trabajo en común con el pintor pintor Jesús Placencia los títulos Ashes to Ashes (Editora Regional de Extremadura, 2011),) y Diez Mandamientos (La Oficina ediciones, 2016).

En 2016 la editorial Fondo de Cultura Económica sacó a la luz la antología Escribir y borrar, que incluye también una selección de su obra ensayística, entre la que cabe destacar el libro de prosas acerca de la escritura poética Alguien aquí (Hiperión, 2005), El margen, el error, la tachadura (de la metáfora y otros asuntos más o menos poéticos) (Diputación de Badajoz, Premio de ensayo “Fernando Pérez”, 2011) y Lengua del alma (“Poética y Poesía”, Fundación Juan March, 1919).

En 2019 recibió la “Medalla de Extremadura” por su trayectoria.

Junto con Juan Abeleira ha traducido A la Misteriosa y Las tinieblas de Robert Desnos (Hiperión).

Tres de sus libros han sido traducidos al sueco y, una antología de su obra, al italiano.
