But in recent years there is considerable worry about democratic backsliding in India. What are the manifestations of this backsliding? What are the longer term social and economic forces that are contributing to it? Where might there be possibilities for renewal?  This talk will explore these questions. It will place the current state of Indian Democracy in historical and comparative context. \n  \n  \nPratap Bhanu Mehta \n  \nDr. Pratap Bhanu Mehta is one of India’s leading public intellectuals. He has held several teaching positions\, including at Ashoka University\, where he was also the Vice Chancellor from 2017-2019\, NYU School of Law\, and at Harvard University\, where he taught for many years.  Mehta has published widely in the fields of political theory\, intellectual history\, constitutional law\, politics and society in India and international politics. \nDr. Mehta has served on many central government committees\, including India’s National Security Advisory Board\, the Prime Minister of India’s National Knowledge Commission\, and a Supreme Court-appointed committee on elections in Indian universities.
