The National Science Foundation’s Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers (MRSEC) are among the premier materials research programs in the country. To start developing ideas for a potential MRSEC proposal from Syracuse University in spring 2022, the BioInspired Institute is organizing several brainstorming meetings. These are organized around themes that could possibly lead to Interdisciplinary Research Groups (IRGs) that anchor the MRSEC.
This meeting is devoted to brainstorming ideas around Cellular-inspired or living synthetic Matter that fits with strengths at Syracuse University. For example, this could involve understanding the core physical components that allow cells to sense, move, and divide for studying the first principles of biologically emergent materials and identifying design principles for smart and adaptable synthetic materials and robots. This session will be facilitated by Jennifer Ross (Physics), Davoud Mozhdehi (Chemistry), and Lisa Manning (Physics).
