The U.S. Department of Justice found that American Indian women face murder rates that are more than 10 times the national average. Four out of five of our Native women are affected by violence today.

As part of our Native Heritage Month programming, College of Law alum Portia Kayantos Skenandore-Wheelock ’18, will present on her advocacy work to affect legislation that affects Native communities, including the missing and murdered indigenous women movement to stop the violence.

Portia is a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and spends much of her time traveling between home and the Oneida homelands in upstate New York. She is also an Oneida silver work artist and has exhibited her work in museums and art shows.
