After almost two years of online mixers – finally, we will have one in a hybrid format!

Lundgren Room, 1st floor at Life and Sciences Building, Syracuse University

Our guests, who will be on campus in person, are artist Anna Lindemann (University of Connecticut) and Kelly M. Schmid, Ph.D. (Cornell University). Their presentations will be followed by a moderated discussion with the audience.

Anna Lindemann https://annalindemann.com/ will introduce her work as an Evo Devo Artist. In her creative work, Anna combines animation, video, music, and performance to explore the emerging field of evolutionary developmental biology (Evo Devo). As part of her talk, Anna will highlight works inspired by natural history collections, including an interactive natural history exhibit entitled The Legacy of a Lifetime of Collecting and an art science performance on the evolution of eusociality in ants and humans entitled The Colony.

Anna Lindemann graduated magna cum laude with honors from Yale with a BS in Biology before receiving an MFA in Integrated Electronic Arts from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Digital Media & Design Department at the University of Connecticut where she has pioneered courses integrating art and science.

Kelly M. Schmid, Ph.D.
Cornell University Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Kelly Schmid is currently a part of a collaborative research project investigating how learning multifactorial genetics concepts affect undergraduate students’ deterministic thinking. This talk will focus on to what degree these concepts are currently being addressed in undergraduate genetics courses, through the analysis of published, freely available assessments.

Schmid received both my M.S. in Biology and Ph.D. in Biology from Syracuse University – working in Dr. Jannice Friedman’s evolutionary biology lab for my master’s and Dr. Jason Wiles’ biology education research lab for my Ph.D. She is currently a Postdoctoral Associate in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department at Cornell University working on biology education research in Dr. Michelle Smith’s lab. When she is not working, she loves being in the woods with her pup and husband (hiking, backpacking trail running, etc.), as well as swimming, reading, and baking.

The Bio Art mixer is where art and life sciences, faculty, and students share their research and/or look at it from the perspective of a different discipline. The Bio Art mixer was initiated by Heidi Hehnly (Bio, SU) and Boryana Rossa (Transmedia, SU) in collaboration with the Canary Lab.
