The Department of African American Studies is proud to present its 39th African American Studies Colloquium featuring this 2021 Fall Program:
Eminent scholar George Lipsitz and Grammy nominated trumpeter/composer Ambrose Akinmusire join Williams to discuss his new book, Crossing Bar Lines: The Politics and Practices of Black Musical Space. Panel will examine how Black musical expression, particularly improvisation, creates space for social commentary and political solidarity with social movements, including Black Lives Matter, and intervenes into legacies of placelessness and marginalization.

This program has received generous support from the Syracuse University Humanities Center.*The first 20 registrants for this Zoom webinar will receive free copies of Crossing Bar Lines: The Politics and Practice of Black Musical Space by James Gordon Williams.
