Shake It Up! Novelty Salt and Pepper Shakers

Civilizations may rise and fall, but culinary essentials salt and pepper have adorned the table of man unwaveringly since antiquity. This exhibit explores one of their more endearing methods of delivery, the novelty salt and paper shaker. Made of materials as diverse as plastic, glass, wood, and steel, their designs range from utilitarian to nearly unusable. Peppered with a sense of playful irreverence, they display kitsch at its most practical. 

 A majority of the objects featured in this display are on gracious loan from Winn Wasson, Social Science Librarian at Bird Library.
