The Spoken Word Poetry Institute brings together leading poets and activists utilizing the media of spoken word to engage SU/SUNY ESF students. The Institute’s participants will learn hands-on techniques that will help them to develop as writers and strengthen their performance skills, as well as create a platform from which they will understand the scope of spoken word poetry’s history, culture, and politics.
This year, the Institute has organized a multi-day program. On Thursday, Sept. 23, join Verbal Blend in honoring the 10th anniversary of Nu Rho Poetic Society, awarding Shihan Van Clief the Poetic Icon Award, and experiencing live performances by Van Clief and Nu Rho Poetic Society.
The remaining events during the Institute include an informational with Nu Rho Poetic Society (Sept. 24) and the Writer’s Workshop (Sept. 25).
The Institute helps students deepen their scholarship and practice as spoken word artists, as well as engage in a discussion on the best practices for raising awareness of social issues using spoken word poetry. Moreover, the day will highlight a theme that will further strengthen participants’ knowledge and understanding of spoken word scholarship, culture, and politics.
