Graduate students and faculty from both the Department of Biology and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at SU would like to invite you for another exciting event in our Diversity in E4 Seminar Series.

This time, we will be hosting a virtual talk by Dr. Sylvia Lee from the US EPA’s Office of Research and Development.

Time: Thursday September 30th, 2021, 4 PM ET. We will also be hosting an interaction/networking virtual lunch for graduate students with Dr. Lee at 12pm.

Title: Small diatoms, big opportunities that shaped my professional and personal growth as an Asian American aquatic ecologist.

About the speaker: Sylvia Lee will present about her background as a Korean American and her experience navigating a career in ecology and studying diatoms, an area of work that her parents never expected for their daughter. Sylvia will share her perspectives on the model minority myth and the intersecting nature of privilege and marginalization. An overview of current projects Sylvia is working on at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency may be of interest to anyone thinking about science outside of academia and environmental research at the interface of science and policy.

About the series: Graduate students and faculty from the Department of Biology and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at SU have been working towards a virtual seminar series focused on greater inclusion of scientists from underrepresented backgrounds studying ecology, evolution, earth and the environment. This seminar series, in addition to showcasing current research in the field, will also provide an opportunity for the student population to interact with scientists from diverse backgrounds.
