WORKSHOP ONE: INCLUSION IN THE CLASSROOM AND BEYOND

This three-hour workshop, designed by faculty for faculty, explores key concepts of cultural sensitivity and the practices of cultural competency, with emphasis on identity, diversity in the learning environment, and the climate for inclusion and equity. This introductory workshop provides a foundation for later learning opportunities to be offered through the Office of Academic Affairs.  This introduction workshop includes:

• case studies directly relevant to our global University community and
• powerful video clips from an original Syracuse University film, (…and nobody said anything: Uncomfortable Conversations about Diversity), by Professors Mara Sapon-Shevin, School of Education, and Richard Breyer, Newhouse School of Public Communications

Our goal is to use experiential learning to immerse faculty in both current concepts and simulated incidents. The workshop probes these issues in ways appropriate for faculty and challenges them to reflect critically on diverse student experiences in the learning environment of Syracuse University. An important element is for faculty to develop responses to critical incidents of implicit and explicit bias—and to try out and discuss these responses with peers. This element provides professors with effective tools for creating an inclusive classroom while also creating a community of faculty peers whose advice and support can be sought when challenging incidents or questions arise. We expect this peer community to be among the most significant outcomes of this workshop.
