A Talk by Nigel Gould-Davies, Former UK Ambassador to Belarus
Senior Fellow for Russia and Eurasia, International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS)
Editor of Strategic Survey
Russia’s war in Ukraine is the most serious military aggression in Europe since 1945. It has provoked the worst crisis in Russian-Western relations in over three decades. It is transforming the geopolitical landscape and having a profound impact on international trade and finance. There are fears that its escalation could lead to the use of weapons of mass destruction. What choices face the West? How will diplomatic, military and economic dimensions evolve? What will its long-term impact be?
Nigel Gould-Davies is Senior Fellow for Russia and Eurasia, and Editor of Strategic Survey at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). Prior to joining the IISS, Nigel taught and conducted research on international relations in Asia. From 2010–14, he held senior government relations roles in the energy industry in central and southeast Asia. From 2000–10, he served in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, where his roles included serving as head of the economics department in Moscow, ambassador to Belarus and project director in the strategy unit. From 1996–2000, he taught politics and international relations at Oxford University. He is author of Tectonic Politics: Global Political Risk in an Age of Transformation (Brookings, 2019). Gould-Davies holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Oxford University and a PhD from Harvard.
