Electing the Italian President of the Republic has never been an easy operation over the history of the Italian Republic. The success of the procedure is usually based on the ability of the leaders of the most relevant parties to find the best compromise among them and to persuade their MPs to follow the party discipline. The 2022 election presented all the conditions to complicate further the operations – a combination of an uncertain socio-economic situation, barely ungovernable MPs, weak party leaders, and a very strong Premier (Mario Draghi).

The talk will introduce the role of the President of the Italian Republic and its importance for the political stability of the country. Then, I will present the Elections of 2022, the objectives of the most important actors involved, and their strategies. Finally, I will analyze the outcome of the election and possible consequences for the Italian political landscape.
