The Syracuse University campus community is invited to attend a free screening of the 2019 documentary film “Red Penguins” from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. March 3 at the College of Law’s Dineen Hall. The event will include a pre-film introduction and post-film Q&A with the documentary’s central character, Steven Warshaw, and former Russian Penguins star/three-time Stanley Cup champion Sergei Brylin.

“Red Penguins” tells the story of capitalism and opportunism run amok in 1990s Moscow. Shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins and CSKA Moscow (better known as the Red Army) formed a joint venture led by American sports marketing whiz Warshaw ’81.

Warshaw was sent to Moscow and tasked to transform the team into the greatest show in Russia, Warshaw attracted some of the biggest names in Hollywood and devised stunts such as bears serving beers on a hockey rink in Moscow. Warshaw, the managing director of Universal Sports Marketing, takes the viewer on a bizarre journey that captures a pivotal moment in U.S.-Russian relations in a lawless era when oligarchs made their fortunes and multiple murders went unsolved.

Read an interview about the film with Warshaw and director Gabe Polsky, and here are critic reviews from Rotten Tomatoes.
