Every year, the Newhouse School honors journalists with the Toner Prizes for Excellence in Political Reporting. Join us for a discussion with the 2022 winners: Amy Gardner and Joshua Dawsey of The Washington Post and David Wickert and Greg Bluestein of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Edecio Martinez, professor of practice in broadcast and digital journalism, will moderate the discussion.

2022 Toner Prize for Excellence in National Political ReportingAmy Gardner and Joshua DawseyGardner, a national reporter covering voting as part of democracy team, and Dawsey, a political investigations and enterprise reporter, were part of the team from The Washington Post that won for “The Attack.” The investigation into the causes, costs and aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol revealed how law enforcement agencies failed to heed mounting threats of violence in Washington, documented the bloody consequences of President Donald Trump’s rhetoric and mapped how a deep distrust of the voting process has taken hold across the country, shaking the underpinnings of democracy.

2022 Toner Prize for Excellence in Local Political ReportingDavid Wickert and Greg BluesteinWickert, state government and transportation reporter, and Bluestein, political reporter, were part of a seven-person team from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that won for “Inside the Campaign to Undermine Georgia’s Election.” The multipart digital package examined the period between the November 2020 presidential election and the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, when Georgia was at the center of the biggest election dispute of modern American history.
