From targeted ads and credit scoring to voice assistants and autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence (AI) and the algorithms harnessing its enormous power are taking over many of the decision-making processes we rely on in our day-to-day lives. While some fear the potential of smart algorithms to infringe on our autonomy, agency, and freedom once machines surpass human intelligence and “take over,” this lecture seeks to unpack the much more immediate and insidious effects of the “AI revolution” we are already facing without even knowing it. We will explore questions such as: What are the cutting-edge innovations in the AI space today?, How can we understand the ethical risks AI poses?, Is the progress promised by AI unequivocally good and if not, who is at risk and how can we use information science to protect ourselves and create a more equitable future for all?
