As we all know, for PhD students, postdocs, and other aspirants to quality academic careers, it’s “publish or perish” – no pressure, right?? Never fear: with some research and planning, you can give your publication record the heft needed for success in a tight job market without slowing your progress to degree or other professional goals. This discussion will cover the characteristics of a journal article as opposed to other genres of academic writing; when, where, and how to submit your work; navigating the review process; and deriving maximum career benefit from your publication(s). The session will be geared toward single- or dual-author publications, as is the norm in the humanities and common in the humanistic social sciences and some professional fields. The BioInspired Institute is hosting a workshop oriented toward multiple-author articles (typical of STEM fields), “Navigating the Journal Publishing Process,” at 3:00 p.m. on October 19.
