This event has already occurred. The information may no longer be valid.

In 2020, the Center for Graduate Career Success conducted a survey of 3,500 PhDs. We learned that the vast majority of PhDs fear that a non-academic job will be less rewarding and intellectually stimulating than being a professor. We know from our research that PhDs are able to forge meaningful and impactful careers in all industries and sectors. In this workshop, participants will learn how to find a nonacademic career where they will thrive, engage in meaningful work, ad be connected to people and projects that matter to them.

Workshop attendees will be able to:

  • Describe how non-academic careers provide intellectual and rewarding work for PhDs.
  • Illustrate how values and motivators can be career hooks.
  • Recognize the importance of identifying your Optimal Career Pathway.

Join us at 12:00 p.m. for lunch, followed by the talk at 12:30!

The workshop is led by L. Maren Wood, PhD (UNC-Chapel Hill, History), Director and CEO of the Center for Graduate Career Success, a mission-driven organization that partners with universities to prepare master’s and doctoral students for career success. Since 2012, Dr. Wood has dedicated her career to supporting universities in preparing graduate students and PhDs for meaningful careers in academia and beyond.
