Michael “Goldie” Goldstone rose to prominence signing ill-fated band Mother Love Bone out of the burgeoning Seattle grunge scene; when lead singer Andrew Wood died from a drug overdose, remaining band members formed the core of Pearl Jam. Goldie went on to sign top-selling acts including Rage Against the Machine, Buckcherry and Regina Spektor, demonstrating an ear for talent and success that knows no genre boundaries.

Having scaled the pinnacles of major label success, Goldie left the major label work behind in 2008 to found indie label powerhouse Mom+Pop records with Cliff Burnstein and Peter Mensch of Q Prime Management. Mom+Pop has released a string of acclaimed records from artists as diverse as Courtney Barnett, Beach Bunny, Caamp, Ashe, Sleater-Kinney, Porter Robinson, Flume, Seb, Orion Sun, Tom Morello and many others.

At this week’s lecture, which is part of the Bandier program’s Rezak Music Business Lecture Series, we will dive heavily into the pros and cons of the indie label life as compared to the majors, and view the modern music business through the lens of two current Mom+Pop projects, Beach Bunny and Ashe. We will also discuss Goldie’s career path and the many lessons he has learned along the way.
