Memorial Service in Honor of R. Gustav Niebuhr

Syracuse University will host a formal memorial service in Hendricks Chapel on Friday, Dec. 29 at 3 PM, to honor the life of R. Gustav Niebuhr.

Niebuhr had a dual faculty appointment at Syracuse University in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and the College of Arts and Sciences as an associate professor of religion and media.

As a journalist and author, R. Gustav Niebuhr changed the coverage of religion in the United States by reporting on stories that showed how people’s faith contributed to shaping their political and civic activities and beliefs.  

At Syracuse University, Niebuhr shared with students his unparalleled expertise and enthusiasm for writing and reporting with students while also providing a patient and encouraging presence in the classroom. 

The ceremony will begin at 3 PM in Hendricks Chapel and will feature remarks by members of the Syracuse University campus community alongside members of Niebuhr’s family.
