This session, specifically for graduate student instructors and TAs, serves as a follow-up to the CTLE faculty workshop Teach Students How to Learn: Metacognition Is the Key, with Dr. Saundra McGuire. Upon registering (link below), grad students will be able to download a two-page Graphic Organizer, to be completed during/after watching the video of the faculty workshop (minimally, from the 15:00-minute mark to the 1:35:00 mark). Email the completed Graphic Organizer to Glenn Wright (glwright@syr.edu) at least one day before the follow-up session to receive the Zoom meeting link.
21st-century students come to college with widely varying academic skills, approaches to learning, and motivation levels. Instructors often lament that students are focused on achieving high grades but are not willing to invest much time or effort in learning. This session focuses on the importance of helping students acquire simple but effective learning strategies based on cognitive science principles. We will engage in interactive reflection activities that will allow attendees to experience strategies that can significantly improve student success by transforming students’ attitudes about the meaning of learning.
The follow-up session is facilitated by Dr. Laurel Willingham-McLain of the CTLE.
