Bharati Award Recipient Presentations

The Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs’ South Asia Center presents the 2022 Bharati Award Recipient Presentations. Award recipient Nimisha Thakur, doctoral candidate, Department of Anthropology, will discuss an ethic of self-sufficiency among the Mising—a constitutionally recognized Scheduled Tribe in India—based in their lived understandings of mobile riverine land amidst increasing precarities induced by emerging capitalist projects and climate crises in her talk “River Song:  Riverine Values, Ethics and Cosmologies for a Life beyond Capitalist Decay in the Brahmaputra Floodplains.”  

Award recipient Jay Sharma, doctoral candidate, Department of Anthropology, will argue that the life histories of three elders in tribal Jharkhand reveal a sophisticated understanding of commodity, money, and exchange value, thereby challenging any alleged lack of economic modernity premised on neo-classical understandings in his talk “Mine, Money, and the Community: Revisiting ‘Tribal Economy’ through Life-Histories of Ho Adivasis in Jharkhand, India.”
