The Syracuse University Brass Ensemble and Syracuse Vocal Ensemble–directed by James T. Spencer and Julie Pretzat, respectively–are presenting two joint concerts of late Renaissance and early Baroque masterpieces. The first is Saturday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the University’s Hendricks Chapel; the second is Sunday, May 21, at 3 p.m. in St. Mary’s Church in Auburn, New York. The concerts are open to the public. Donations are accepted at the door.

The program features the timeless polychoral writing of Giovanni Gabrieli, Henrich Schutz, Adrian Willaert and Jacob Handl, all of whom were affiliated with St. Mark’s Chapel in Venice. “With its multiple balconies, St. Mark’s inspired composers to spatially separate their performing groups, creating a unique quadrophonic effect,” says Spencer,  noting that the church also was the center of Venetian musical life for centuries. “Our concerts will follow suit, drawing on the magnificent architecture and acoustics of Hendricks Chapel and St. Mary’s Church.”

The award-winning, 35-piece Syracuse University Brass Ensemble is the College of Arts and Sciences‘ ensemble-in-residence. The 40-year-old group also enjoys a long association with Hendricks Chapel.

The Syracuse Vocal Ensemble is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary. The critically acclaimed, 20-member group has a catalog of more than 200 pieces.

Both ensembles regularly feature Syracuse students, faculty and alumni.
