Ukraine: Myths and Reality

“Myths which are believed in tend to become true.”

– George Orwell

It’s time for MythBusters! The history of every nation is shrouded in myths. Images, symbols, legends, stereotypes—what is the truth and what is fiction? We will discuss common myths about Ukraine—the contest for the inheritance of Rus’, the Cossack myth, the Pereyaslivska Rada, and cossaks kharacterniks—and learn more about Bandera and banderivtsi, Mazepa and Mazepinism, the Holodomor and Soviet nostalgia, where the Maidan came from, and more.

Come be a MythBuster at the Ukrainian Table!

Food and drink provided.

Hosted by Tetiana Hranchak, visiting assistant teaching professor, Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs
