“A Canadian Perspective on Public Service: From Following to Leading,” with the Honourable Marc Garneau.

From the hallowed halls of the Canadian Parliament to outer space, the Honourable Marc Garneau has had a remarkable journey in public service over five decades that began in the Royal Canadian Navy and culminated as a member of the Trudeau Cabinet as minister of transport and later as minister of foreign affairs from a seat in Parliament for Notre-Dame-de-Grace-Westmont in Montreal, Quebec.

During his path of service, he was selected to the first class of the Canadian Astronaut Corps and the first Canadian to fly aboard the space shuttle. After his second space flight, he was appointed to lead the Canadian Space Agency. Thereafter he was elected to Parliament, then guided the nation’s transportation policy and programmes, and later assumed the duties of conducting the nation’s foreign policy from these ministerial posts in Ottawa.

Now retired from his experiences as a participant in an array of global changes over a half century, Garneau’s Phanstiel Lecture presentation will reflect on his public service journey from following to leading.
