In most disciplines, the realities of the academic job market are such that you’ll be applying for virtually all available positions that align with your specialization. But those positions will be posted by institutions that vary widely in several important ways–large and small, public and private, teaching-focused and research-intensive–and have their own unique identities and priorities. In each case, you’ll need to persuade the hiring committee that you’re a good fit for the school and sincerely want to be there. Find out what they’re looking for and how you can put your best foot forward from a highly experienced faculty panel representing a small, private liberal arts college, a Master’s-granting comprehensive state school, and a doctorate-granting R1 university.

The panelists:

  • Jeffery Frank, Professor of Education and Director of the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Assessment, St. Lawrence University
  • Kristina Marty, Professor of Public Administration and Senior Associate Dean of Community and Public Affairs, Binghamton University
  • Mary McGuire, Associate Professor of Political Science and Assistant Dean of Arts & Sciences, SUNY Cortland
