“Victim/Suspect” (90 mins) chronicles journalist Rachel de Leon’s investigation into a disturbing pattern: young women report sexual assault to the police and instead of the perpetrators being brought to justice, the women are arrested for filing a false report. Working for The Center for Investigative Reporting, de Leon’s exhaustive research uncovers a surprisingly larger number of these cases nationwide, including telling recordings of police interviews of victims reporting their sexual assault.

The documentary screening will be followed by a Q&A with Rachel de Leon, moderated by Newhouse Professional in Residence Natasha Senjanovic, and with questions from the audience as well.

The event is open to all SU faculty, staff, students and the public. It is co-sponsored by the Knight Chair in Data and Explanatory Journalism; the departments of Broadcast and Digital Journalism, and Magazine, News and Digital Journalism; and Women and Gender Studies.

This event was first published on October 6, 2023 and last updated on October 11, 2023.
