The 2023-24 Public Diplomacy and Global Communications Cohort is proud to announce “Public Diplomacy Today: Exploring Global Engagement through Public Diplomacy and Preventative Diplomacy.” This symposium will be held to explore aspects of public diplomacy with the help of experts from several different fields.

We’ll start our day at 9:30 a.m. in Newhouse 1, Room 101, with coffee and donuts before diving into “Global Engagement Through Public Diplomacy: Shaping Perceptions, Cultivating Relationships” at 10 a.m. This first session will spotlight a panel discussion, focusing on public diplomacy’s essence and transformative power. This session aims to not only distinguish public diplomacy from its counterparts in international relations and public relations but also to immerse our audience in the depth and breadth of public diplomacy.

Following lunch at 12:30 p.m., in the second session, we will host a panel of experts for a discussion on preventative diplomacy. Preventative diplomacy proactively aims to stop conflicts before they start and prevent existing disputes from escalating into violence. In today’s interconnected world, there is a need for more creative solutions involving not just governments, but also stakeholders from civil society and private businesses. These groups wield significant influence in shaping modern international affairs. Our panel will bring together experts from critical realms relating to preventative diplomacy, including activism and social movements, sport and international athletics, new media and journalism and diplomatic missions by the United States government and military.

There will be Q&A sessions following both panels, with our program concluding at 2 p.m. There will be boxed lunches available during the hour lunch break, though availability is limited. If you are interested in reserving a boxed lunch and attending the event, please fill out this form.
