The Z Generation: Do Young Russians Love Fascism?

The Moynihan Institute’s Center for European Studies is proud to host Ian Garner to present his book, “Z Generation: Into the Heart of Russia’s Fascist Youth” (Oxford University Press/Hurst). 

Garner’s book reveals the dark realities of youth fascism in Russia. In this journey through the postmodern subjectivity of today’s Russian youth, we’ll discover how the youth politics of Putin’s state have been refined over the last two decades. What does the state see in its next generation? How are they appealing to young Russians using social media? And will young Russians fall in love with the state’s militaristic politics?

The College Bookstore will have a pop-up table selling copies of Dr. Garner’s book after the talk.

Ian Garner is a scholar of Russian culture and war propaganda based at Queen’s University, Ontario. His first book, “Stalingrad Lives” (McGill-Queen’s UP), explored the nascence and growth of the myth of the Battle of Stalingrad. His most recent book, “Z Generation” (Oxford UP/Hurst), challenges received wisdom about liberal tendencies in Russia’s youngest generation to argue that the Russian state’s militarizing education and propaganda may prove successful.

Reviewed in major publications around the world and translated into five languages, “Z Generation” has been an international success. Garner regularly appears on major media networks in North America and abroad and writes for major publications from The Guardian to the Washington Post and beyond.
