Excellence in Political Reporting: A discussion with the 2024 Toner Prize winners
Every year, the Newhouse School honors journalists with the Toner Prizes for Excellence in Political Reporting. Join us for a discussion with the 2024 winners: Greg Jaffe and Patrick Marley of The Washington Post and alumna Julia Terruso ’11 and Aseem Shukla of the Philadelphia Inquirer (Shukla has since moved to the San Francisco Chronicle).
Margaret Talev, Kramer Director of the Syracuse University Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship, will moderate the discussion.
2024 Toner Prize for Excellence in National Political Reporting
Winner: The Washington Post
Jaffe and Marley won for “Ottawa County,” a series of four stories last year from Ottawa County, Michigan. Over more than a dozen reporting trips, the pair documented the dissolution of trust in Ottawa after newly elected county commissioners, driven by ideology and suspicion, took power.
2024 Toner Prize for Excellence in Local Political Reporting
Winner: The Philadelphia Inquirer
Shukla and Terruso will join us this evening as part of the five-person winning reporting team for the four-part series, “The Race for Philadelphia’s 100th Mayor.”
Tuesday, Dec. 3, 6:30 p.m.
