Boston University Professor Nazli Kibria will present, “‘Education was Equally Important for All of Us’:

Siblings and Family Cultures of Mobility, Gender and Higher Education in Middle-Class India,” as part of the Sociology Department Colloquium Series.

Abstract:

For middle-class Indian families, the project of class mobility and identity is anchored in that of children’s achievements in school, eventually leading to entry into high-status professional occupations for them. Drawing on “sibling education histories” or the accounts of middle-class Indians about their own educational trajectory as well as those of their siblings, the talk will explore family strategies and negotiations around higher education.
