This workshop for faculty is based on the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research’s (CIMER) Entering Mentoring curriculum and will focus on recognizing where students are at in their understanding and encouraging them to become independent at an appropriate rate. The materials are relevant for mentoring at all levels, but with a specific focus on graduate researchers. This is an active workshop where participants work with a community of peers to develop and improve their mentoring skills. Participants will start to develop or enhance their own personal mentoring philosophy and leave with a set of strategies to help with mentoring challenges. The workshop, led by CIMER-trained facilitator Heather Coleman (Biology), is capped at 25 participants. Attendance at the earlier workshop (Thursday, October 24, 2:00-3:30 p.m. in Bird Library 114), focused on effective communication and setting expectations, is not required.
