TA Program Coffee Hour: “One Month in-What I Didn’t Hear at Orientation”

September 19, 2024 at 3:00pm4:00pm EDT

Lyman Hall, 303

During the TA orientation, the Teaching Mentor (TM) staff covers a wide breadth of topics that Teaching Assistants will (and have) encountered in their classrooms and labs. To continue these conversations, the TA Program announces the return of the Teaching Assistant Coffee Hour, an informal and friendly space where TMs and TAs can dive deeper into many TA-relevant themes. Each coffee hour will have a starting topic or theme, but the conversations can go wherever you like.

TAs will have an opportunity to share their experiences with peers and collaboratively workshop with a supportive group of teaching mentors and teaching assistants!

We hope you will join us each month to meet peers from different disciplines across campus to share your experiences, listen and learn from others, and discuss new strategies to implement in your classes!  Light refreshments will be provided.

“One month in: What I didn’t hear at orientation”

Whether you have been teaching for a few weeks, a semester, or years, there are always new issues and unexpected situations that arise in the classroom.  Come join us to discuss the most pressing issues and concerns that you have about your TA role and your performance in the classroom.  We will talk especially about building community and addressing conflict in the classroom. All TAs are welcome for a spirited discussion of what issues concern you most.

Registration for this session is helpful for space and food purposes.  Please email Shawn Loner (scloner@syr.edu) to RSVP.
