How to Go Public: Writing for People Outside Your Specialty

September 30, 2024 at 2:15pm3:30pm EDT

Bird Library, 114

Graduate school teaches specialization, and expertise. Whether you’re studying superconductors, crowd behavior, or Mexican cinema, you are in the process of becoming one of the world’s leading experts in your specialized topic. But how do you get the news out? The people in your subfield can already appreciate you, but what about everybody else? It’s not enough to do the research–you have to be able to communicate your findings. In this presentation/workshop, Leonard Cassuto, professor of English at Fordham University and “Graduate Adviser” columnist for the Chronicle of Higher Ed, will show you the judgment calls you need to make in order to communicate with people outside of your specialty–and how to make those judgments. Attendees will be entered in a drawing to receive one of 10 copies of Prof. Cassuto’s book, Academic Writing as if Readers Matter (Princeton UP, 2024). This event is co-sponsored by the Graduate School, the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, and the Syracuse University Humanities Center.
