Lunch and Learn: The Welcoming Syllabus
August 11, 2025 at 12:00pm – 1:30pm EDT
Bird Library, 550 (CTLE)
First impressions matter! What impression does your syllabus give to students? In this Lunch and Learn, we’ll identify key messages a syllabus can convey to students and explore ways to make our syllabus a welcoming invitation to our course activities and content. We’ll begin by defining what makes a syllabus “welcoming” and invitational, based on what the abundant scholarship of teaching and learning shows is most effective in communicating with today’s students. Then we’ll look at some specific language examples and, finally, after some group brainstorming, participants will have time to engage in their syllabus writing and revisions. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their laptops and a syllabus for this portion of the workshop. This session is limited to eight participants. Please register by Aug. 1.
