Artist Talk with Painter Mark Joshua Epstein

Mark Joshua Epstein’s research is driven by a desire to formulate an abstract visual language that is embedded with markers of personal history and cultural identity.
Epstein received an M.F.A. from the Slade School of Fine Arts at University College London and a B.F.A. from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Epstein has had solo or two-person shows at Turley Gallery (Hudson, New York), Asya Geisberg Gallery (New York City), Ortega y Gasset Projects’ Skirt Space (Brooklyn, New York), SPRING/BREAK Art Show (New York City), Handwerker Gallery (Ithaca, New York), NARS Foundation (Brooklyn, New York), Caustic Coastal (Salford, UK), Vane Gallery (Newcastle, UK), Demo Project (Springfield, Illinois), Biquini Wax Gallery (Mexico City) and Brian Morris Gallery (New York City).
Selected group shows include Geary Contemporary (Millerton, New York), Gaa Gallery (Provincetown, Massachusetts), Golden Foundation (New Berlin, New York), Geary (Millerton, New York), Marquee Projects (Bellport, New York), TSA New York (Brooklyn, New York), Arlington Arts Center (Arlington, Virginia), Collar Works (Troy, New York), Good Children Gallery (New Orleans), Monaco (St. Louis), Beverly’s (New York City), Des Moines Art Center (Des Moines, Iowa) and the Nerman Museum (Overland Park, Kansas).
Epstein has been an artist-in-residence at the British School at Rome, Fine Arts Work Center (Provincetown, Massachusetts), Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, Vermont), Millay (Austerlitz, New York), Jentel Foundation (Banner, Wyoming), Macdowell (Peterborough, New Hampshire) and more. His work has appeared in Hyperallergic, Chronogram, Whitewall, New American Paintings, Art Maze Magazine, Dovetail and Two Coats of Paint. He is currently a 2024/2025 artist in residence at the Sharpe Walentas Studio Program in Brooklyn, New York.
