Join the Program for Latin America and the Caribbean for a documentary screening and hybrid panel led by the de Sardon-Glass Fellows. The first film in this four film series is “The Hidden Costs: Social and Environmental Impacts of Informal and Illegal Mining in Peru.” This event will be hosted by Thalia Simich and Sandra Gonzales, de Sardon-Glass Fellows and students of the executive master of public administration program.

This film series is co-sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literature and Linguistics, the Department of Film and Media Arts (VPA)  and the Department of Television, Radio and Film (Newhouse).

Film abstract:

“The Hidden Costs: Social and Environmental Impacts of Informal and Illegal Mining in Peru”

The event will feature the screening of the documentary “River of Gold,” which explores the destruction of the Amazon rainforest in Peru caused by illegal gold mining, highlighting its profound impacts on society, the environment and the economy. The screening will be followed by a hybrid panel and constructive dialogue aimed at raising awareness, sharing insights, and fostering discussion about potential solutions to mitigating the social and environmental impacts of illegal mining in Peru.

Hybrid Panelists Panelists:

Nuria Esparch is a former de Sardon-Glass Fellow and current senior manager of institutional relations at Southern Peru Copper Corporation.

Zaraí Toledo is a specialist in illegal economies associated with mining. Her main research focuses on how excluded groups participate in politics in highly unequal societies, from indigenous and campesino communities to informal traders and small-scale miners. She holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of British Columbia (UBC).

Hosts:

Thalia Simich is a current de Sardon-Glass Fellow pursuing an executive master of public administration at the Maxwell School, with experience in environmental law and natural resource governance in the mining, electricity and hydrocarbon sectors.

Sandra Gonzales is a current de Sardon-Glass Fellow pursuing an executive master of public administration at the Maxwell School. She is an economic engineer with 15 years of experience in finance, risk supervision and regulation.
