Telling Your Research Story

February 28, 2025 at 10:00am3:00pm EST

Lyman Hall, 312

This intensive, interactive workshop, led by Mallory Fix-Lopez of Language ConnectED, is designed to assist international graduate students in communicating their research to broad, diverse audiences in English. There is strong evidence that storytelling, when presenting data or other research findings, is key to audience engagement and understanding of the presentation content. Participants will analyze example components of effective research storytelling, practice telling their story to peers, and give/receive feedback on their story. Participants will also explore the role of cross-cultural communication and its implications for speech and messaging. Lunch is provided.

Topics include:

  • The importance of framing research for both scholarly and general audiences
  • English language and the rhetoric of storytelling
  • Use of analogies and hooks to make research accessible and interesting
  • The Problem-Research-Payoff storytelling framework
  • Components of effective delivery
  • Clear pronunciation strategies and practice
  • How to describe data (presenting numbers and figures)

The event is specifically for international graduate students, and is capped at 30 participants. Within 24 hours of registering, you will be notified either that a space has been reserved for you or of your place on the waitlist.

The workshop is free, but in order to guarantee full participation, any registrant who does not attend the entirety of the event (without having emailed glwright@syr.edu to cancel at least 48 hours in advance) will be assessed a $25 fee, with a bursar hold pending payment. This event partially satisfies requirements for the Graduate School’s Digital Badge in Research Communication.
