“Evaluating the Impact of Energy Retrofits on Indoor Environmental Quality and Occupant Behavior in University Dormitories: A Case Study from Syracuse University’s South Campus”
Presenter: Sameeraa Soltanian-Zadeh
This presentation explores the impact of deep energy retrofit interventions on indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and occupant behavior in university dormitories at Syracuse University’s South Campus. Using a mixed-methods approach combining real-time sensor data and occupant surveys, we compared pre- and post-retrofit conditions related to indoor air quality, thermal comfort, and ventilation rates. The analysis highlights how retrofit strategies influence occupant experience and behavior, and underscores the importance of integrating user needs into retrofit planning to ensure both energy efficiency and healthy indoor environments.
About the speaker: Sameeraa Soltanian-Zadeh is a PhD student in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Syracuse University, advised by Prof. Jianshun “Jensen” Zhang. She has a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering from the University of Tehran and a master’s degree in building engineering from Politecnico di Milano. She is a recipient of the U.S. Department of Energy 2024 IBUILD Fellowship. Her research focuses on indoor air quality and urban environmental dynamics, highlighting the impact of occupant behaviors impact on indoor air quality and building energy efficiency.
Hosted by the ASHRAE Student Branch at Syracuse University, “Future of Buildings: Graduate Insights and Innovations” presentations are held every other Thursday at 727 E. Washington St. Lunch is provided and free parking is available onsite. Please RSVP to attend.
