Life Sciences Complex

The BioArt Research Coalition of Syracuse (BARCS) is pleased to invite you to the opening reception of the exhibition “Trauma Mapping,” presenting the work of Aksiniya Peycheva. This exhibition is part of the BARCS programming that introduces works by artists who employ scientific methods to express their ideas.

In “Trauma Mapping,” Peycheva uses different data visualizing methodologies to create a pictorial representation of the pain of stray animals. Through this “visual translation,” she explores the possible ways of moving pieces of information across different fields of knowledge. Her central question is “how one or several scientific fields can be combined in order to answer a question only important to art.”

Peycheva holds a Ph.D. and an M.F.A. in public art from the National Art Academy, Sofia. Her works have been shown internationally at respected venues, such as Ars Electronica Festival “Out of the Box,” Manifesta 14, Sofia Arsenal Museum of Contemporary Art, Institute for Contemporary Art and many others. Peycheva often collaborates with scientists. Her works contain different layers of information, utilizing various scientific methodologies in an attempt to redefine the fields of knowledge and rethink their boundaries.

“Trauma Mapping” is featured in the CIMERA exhibition series, curated by Boryana Rossa, professor of art video in the Department of Film and Media Arts.

Supported by Syracuse Seed Grant, Bioinspired Institute, Department of Film and Media Arts, Department of Biology, and a Syracuse Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Engagement (SOURCE) grant.
