Feminist Antiwar Resistance: Evolution of Online Activism in Russia

March 26, 2025 at 4:00pm5:00pm EDT

Eggers Hall, 341

In this talk, Elizaveta Volkovskaia examines how the current Russian government perceives feminism as a threat to its traditional values and seeks to suppress the movement by any means necessary, including labeling activists as foreign agents or designating organizations as undesirable. Feminist Antiwar Resistance (FAR), founded shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, was similarly declared an undesirable organization by the Russian Ministry of Justice in April 2024. However, such measures have not deterred feminist movements from continuing their work, even under increasing restrictions. FAR actively utilizes digital media to produce content, build networks, and share information among its supporters. Through these efforts, its members aim to challenge the regime’s agenda and inform followers about possible ways to preserve their agency within the country. This talk explores FAR’s social media strategies within the broader context of Russian feminism and the evolving landscape of political activism under an increasingly repressive regime.
