Academic Job Market: Research and Teaching Statements

May 21, 2025 at 12:00pm1:30pm EDT

Lyman Hall, 312

The research and teaching statements are the subtlest part of your package. The research statement highlights the value of your work to date, but more crucially, it needs to illustrate your bright future as an academic. As perhaps the most misunderstood and often the most poorly written document of them all, the teaching statement needs to reveal your burgeoning identity in the classroom. Join Dan Olson-Bang, Director of Professional and Career Development at the Graduate School, to learn how to make these essential documents become core to an unforgettable package.

This session is part of the 4-day Academic Job Market Crash Course for graduate students and postdocs, running May 20-23, with daily schedule as follows:

  • 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM: Lunch and Job Market Talks
  • 1:45 PM – 3:00 PM: Designated writing time to draft job market materials based on workshop content
  • 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Receive feedback on materials from participants, Graduate School staff, and staff from the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.
