Mentoring Undergraduates in Research: The Role of Communication and Clear Expectations

May 27, 2025 at 9:00am11:00am EDT

Life Sciences Complex, 106

This workshop for grad students and postdocs is based on the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research’s (CIMER) Entering Mentoring curriculum and will focus on maintaining effective communication and working with undergraduate students to establish clear expectations. This is an active workshop where participants work with a community of peers to develop and improve their mentoring skills. Participants will start to develop or enhance their own personal mentoring philosophy and leave with a set of strategies to help with mentoring challenges. The workshop is led by CIMER-trained facilitator Heather Coleman (Biology).

A second workshop, focusing on assessing understanding and fostering independence, will be offered Wednesday, May 28. The workshops are designed to complement each other, but can also stand alone. Each workshop is capped at 24 participants.
